Chandler is still in love with Joey's girlfriend; he thinks that he's found a way out of the situation when he finds Joey making a date with another girl, but is crushed to find out that Joey intends to date both girls. Things get worse when Chandler has to cover for Joey, who is late for his 'late date.' Ross takes his keyboard out of storage and shares his 'sound' with the friends. They tell him it's great, just to be nice, but Ross takes them seriously.
Elaine's neighbor is out of the country and left her alarm set to go off at 3:30 am. Kramer buys a meat slicer, and Elaine breaks it when he lets her borrow it. Jerry's new girlfriend is a doctor who only talks about healing people. George gets a new job and realizes that he knows the boss from somewhere.
Doug learns that his father has passed away. He drives to California to identify the body and gather his fathers belongings, with Mark along for moral support. While putting his affairs in order, Doug learns some surprising facts about his father, and also has a revelation about his own life and future. A side trip to San Diego, where Marks parents live, unveils Marks uncomfortable relationship with his father and leads to a heated exchange between Mark and Doug.
