During a field trip to Washington D.C. Principal Sezno ditches the group to testify in the Senate that Knob Haven is the worst school in the country. While the rest of the staff attempts to stop Sue, Ennis goes on a personal quest to prove his bravery.

Ed and Lin face off against Envy, and Ed finds himself hesitating to attack due to all the people embedded into Envy's body and gets swallowed. Meanwhile, Scar and May find Shao May with Al and Gluttony and decide to follow them down to an underground tunnel, fighting off several chimeras. Ed spots the Philosopher's Stone inside Envy and manages to figure out a way to escape from Gluttony after seeing the missing piece from the ruins of Xerxes. Bradley explains to Roy how he was trained from birth for leadership and was injected with the Philosopher's Stone. Using various pieces of the Xerxes ruins found in Gluttony's stomach, Ed reluctantly uses the souls inside Envy's stone to transmute himself and open the Door of Truth to escape through. Ed finds Al's body but is unable to bring it back since it isn't his. However, before the Door closes, he bursts through yelling to Al's body that he will come back to get him someday.
It is make or break time for the 24 remaining hopefuls - at the end of today's show they will find out whether they have been chosen for the live stages. There are only three places in each category, so judges Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh have some big decisions to make. PC Penhale is happy when his brother, Sam comes for a visit. Martin thinks that Sam may have a rare genetic disease after he offers to paint the surgery and he watches him. After a blood test is done the results could mean the brothers relationship is changed forever. Al uses some advise that Bert gives him but it just makes his relationship with Pauline worse. Edith hears some embarrassing things about Martin from Louisa.
