George's boss gives him an important assignment, but George doesn't hear all of the details. Elaine overbids on a set of golf clubs for J. Peterman. He tells her not to go over 10,000 dollars, but once Sue Ellen keeps bidding higher than Elaine, Elaine goes over the amount. Once she wins the clubs, she leaves them in Jerry's car. This turns out to be a problem when Jerry takes his car to a fanatical mechanic who takes the car, and the clubs, because Jerry has been mistreating the car. Meanwhile, Kramer and Newman devise a plan to take a bunch of cans to Michigan where they get more per can than in New York.
George's boss is impressed by George's work on the project. Jerry has a detective try to find his car, but the detective doesn't come up with anything. On their way to Michigan, Kramer and Newman see Jerry's car in Ohio and Kramer pursues the car. But in the pursuit, Kramer throws all of the cans and bottles, then Newman out of the mail truck to go faster. The mechanic throws the golf clubs at Kramer to try to lose him. Elaine delivers the mangled clubs to Peterman, who thinks that JFK had a bad temper.
Susan throws herself into her work to escape her stressful personal life, earning recognition from Weaver and Mark, who begin preliminary discussions on next year's chief resident. Carter needs a pediatric rotation with Doug, and fast, to graduate med school. Doug takes up with his father's girlfriend. Shep overreacts and attacks an Asian boy interfering at a scene. Mark and Jenn try to discuss their divorce amicably, with unforeseen results. Benton is named Resident of the Year. Harper leaves for an OB rotation at Parkland in Dallas.
